He began his career in the 1960s in Formula V, where he won several races and set numerous speed records. His records and talent earned him the reputation of being "the next Jochen Rindt". After a break forced by an accident on the Nürburgring circuit, he changed categories to compete in Formula 3000. He was recognized as the oldest driver in history in this Formula, competing successfully against drivers half his age. His position as sole owner and CEO of a commodity trading company meant that he had to hide his identity in order to maintain the trust of his partners and banks. His identity was known only to his closest friends. He died in July 2002 during a race in the Czech Republic while he was leading. Passionate about motorsport, Friedrich Glatz was also fascinated by the world of watchmaking. His sense of mechanical precision and aesthetics led him to collect watches from the early 1990s. This collection has since been carefully preserved in the family of the racing driver and will be offered to the general public for the first time on Thursday, December 7. Lots 83 to 86 come from the Friedrich Glatz collection. 51 lots are also offered for sale online and can be found on piguet.com by searching for the keyword "Glatz" Friedrich aka Fritz Glatz raced the fastest Formula cars under the aliases “John Long”, “Umberto Calvo”, “Pierre Chauvet” and “Frederico Careca” for almost four decades. While his true identity was only known to a few very close friends, he achieved truly remarkable results as a pilot. Starting in the early 1960ies in Formula V, he won many races with new record times and was considered “the next Jochen Rindt” due to his great talent and speed. After a long break imposed by a heavy accident on Nürburgring, he changed to other series, including Formula 3000, where he got into the history books as the oldest driver in the series successfully competing against drivers half his age. His job as the sole owner and CEO of an international commodity trading company made it necessary for him to disguise his real identity not to lose the trust of his business partners and banks. He died in July 2002 in a race in the Czech Republic, while leading the field. Besides his great passion for motorsports, he was fascinated by watches. The mechanical precision and aesthetics always made him start a collection in the early 1990ies that was kept within the family and is now offered to the market. Lots 83 to 86 come from Friedrich Glatz collection. 51 additional lots will be offered in the online auction and can be found on piguet.com with the keyword “Glatz” For this lot, the VAT due by the buyer is calculated on the hammer price increased by the drop, i.e. a total of 32.47% including VAT.
