" Un gars très calme qui sait ce qu'il veut. Un patron. Le plongeur 18/20 ", ce sont les mots qu'utilise Henri-Germain Delauze pour évoquer la personnalité de l'un de ses meilleurs éléments : Philippe Jeantot, définitivement l'un des plus grands plongeurs de la Comex.
Légende de la voile française, Philippe Jeantot a écrit les plus beaux chapitres de l'histoire du Tour du Monde en solitaire. Célèbre dans le monde de la navigation pour avoir créé la course mythique du Vendée Globe, ce Tour du Monde en solitaire sans escale ni assistance, Philippe Jeantot est l'un de ces aventuriers au destin extraordinaire. Une célébrité qui fait trop souvent oublier que cet outsider de la mer a eu une autre vie avant de se consacrer pleinement à la voile et à la navigation : celle d'un plongeur d'élite au service de la Comex.
C'est après son service militaire effectué au Sénégal, que Philippe Jeantot intègre la Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise basée à Marseille. Ce garçon qui "avait la rage d'aller profond" disait Henri-Germain Delauze, va devenir l'un de ses meilleurs éléments.
Ses performances vont être saluées en 1976, année qui marque l'histoire de la Comex par un événement inédit et unique : les Comex Awards.
Pour la première fois, la Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise organise un concours pour récompenser ses meilleurs plongeurs. Les hommes de Delauze sont évalués selon le nombre d'heures de travail effectuées sous l'eau. Avec plus de 112 heures de travaux sous-marins Philippe Jeantot se classe 5ème (112h14) parmi les meilleurs plongeurs de l'année, derrière J.M. Dutriaux (126h), J. Formato (118h23), G. Riehm (117h20) et Baldock (114h36)
Ces 5 plongeurs reçoivent en dotation le 28 janvier 1977 une montre Rolex Submariner ref. 1680 gravée au dos de leur nom et de la date de remise officielle.
Notre exemplaire, gravé au dos " P. Jeantot ", provient d'un collectionneur privé qui l'a acquis directement en 1978 auprès de l'ancien plongeur.
Cette montre de dotation est particulièrement rare car la Comex n'a jamais renouvelé ce prix, ainsi seuls 5 exemplaires portant au dos la gravure " Comex services 28.1.77 " existent. A ce jour, seule la montre ayant été offerte à Jean-Marc Dutriaux est réapparue sur le marché et fut présentée en vente aux enchères deux fois, le 20 mars 2010 à Genève et le 28 juin 2015 à Hong Kong.
Notre exemplaire, est le deuxième à réapparaitre sur le marché.
Surprenante, cette Submariner ref. 1680, est un modèle peu habituel parmi toutes les montres délivrées à la société marseillaise. N'étant pas équipé de valve à hélium pour résister à la pression hyper barre, c'est le modèle le moins adapté aux exigences de la Comex. Ainsi, on estime que parmi les rares Submariner qui auraient été livrées à la Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise par Rolex, la plupart aurait été ensuite offertes par la société à ses partenaires, ses clients ou à ses plongeurs.
Plongeuse culte produite de 1967 à 1979, la réf. 1680 est le premier modèle Submariner avec date à être équipé de la fameuse loupe Cyclope. Notre exemplaire, dit "Red Sub", est particulièrement recherché par les collectionneurs car il n'a été produit que jusqu'en 1975, en plus petite quantité que le modèle classique (Submariner en blanc).
Une lettre signée de la main de Philippe Jeantot, confirmant la vente de cette montre le 12 juillet 1978, sera remise à l'acquéreur.
Philippe Jeantot quitte la Comex vers 1978 après avoir participé à la Mission expérimentale Janus IV, expérience historique réalisée à l'automne 1977 au large des côtes varoises. Cette plongée, la plus audacieuse et la plus risquée qu'ait engagée la Comex, a marqué toute une génération de plongeurs et a contribué au développement de la plongée profonde.
Ayant atteint une position hiérarchique stratégique au sein de la Comex, son départ surprendra Henri-Germain Delauze qui reconnait dans le film "Au bout de mes rêves" dédié à Philippe Jeantot : "Ça a été une surprise. Déçu parce que j'aurais bien aimé le garder, et content qu'il mène bien sa vie et qu'il aille s'amuser après tant d'années de travail et de dévouement".
Nous invitons tous les amateurs et les passionnés à découvrir le film "Au bout de mes rêves", réalisé par Olivier Champeaux en 2007, qui retrace le parcours hors norme de Philippe Jeantot après sa carrière à la Comex.

"A very calm guy who knows what he wants. A boss. The 18/20 diver", these are the words used by Henri-Germain Delauze to evoke the personality of one of his best elements: Philippe Jeantot, definitely one of the greatest divers of the Comex.
A legend of French sailing, Philippe Jeantot has written some of the most beautiful chapters in the history of solo round the world sailing. Famous in the world of sailing for having created the mythical Vendée Globe race, this non-stop single-handed round-the-world race without assistance, Philippe Jeantot is one of those adventurers with an extraordinary destiny. His fame too often makes us forget that this outsider of the sea had another life before devoting himself fully to sailing and navigation: that of an elite diver in the service of the Comex.
It was after his military service in Senegal that Philippe Jeantot joined the Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise based in Marseille. This boy who "had the rage to go deep" said Henri-Germain Delauze, was to become one of its best elements.
His performance was recognised in 1976, a year that marked the history of Comex with a unique and original event: the Comex Awards.
For the first time, the Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise organised a competition to reward its best divers. The men of Delauze are evaluated according to the number of hours they have worked underwater. With more than 112 hours of underwater work Philippe Jeantot ranks 5th (112h14) among the best divers of the year, behind J.M. Dutriaux (126h), J. Formato (118h23), G. Riehm (117h20) and Baldock (114h36)
These 5 divers received a Rolex Submariner watch ref. 1680 engraved on the back with their name and the date of the official presentation.
Our example, engraved on the back "P. Jeantot", comes from a private collector who acquired it directly in 1978 from the former diver.
This endowment watch is particularly rare because Comex has never renewed this prize, so only 5 examples bearing the engraving "Comex services 28.1.77" on the back exist. To date, only the watch that was offered to Jean-Marc Dutriaux has reappeared on the market and was presented at auction twice, on 20 March 2010 in Geneva and on 28 June 2015 in Hong Kong.
Our example is the second to reappear on the market.
Surprisingly, this Submariner ref. 1680 is an unusual model among all the watches issued to the Marseille-based company. Not being equipped with a helium valve to resist the hyperbaric pressure, it is the model least adapted to the requirements of the Comex. Thus, it is estimated that among the rare Submariner that would have been delivered to the Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise by Rolex, most of them would have been offered by the company to its partners, its customers or its divers.
A cult diver produced from 1967 to 1979, the ref. 1680 is the first Submariner model with date to be equipped with the famous Cyclops magnifying glass. Our example, called Sub Red, is particularly sought after by collectors as it was only produced until 1975, in smaller quantities than the classic model (Submariner in white).
A letter signed by Philippe Jeantot confirming the sale of this watch on 12 July 1978 will be given to the buyer.
Philippe Jeantot left Comex around 1978 after participating in the Janus IV experimental mission, a historic experiment carried out in the autumn of 1977 off the Var coast. This dive, the most daring and risky that Comex had undertaken, marked a whole generation of divers and contributed to the development of deep diving.
Having reached a strategic hierarchical position within Comex, his departure came as a surprise to Henri-Germain Delauze, who acknowledged in the film "Au bout de mes rêves" dedicated to Philippe Jeantot: "It was a surprise. Disappointed because I would have liked to keep him, and happy that he is leading a good life and that he is going to enjoy himself after so many years of work and dedication.
