Daytona 6265 1975 Box, Punched Papers and Atelier Service
This spectacular vintage Daytona comes straight from a Rolex Atelier Service. It’s a little known secret that Rolex offers a premium Master Watchmaker service for “exceptional historic watches” - and this Daytona clearly fits that bill. This is a special service that gives your watch the royal treatment, which means hand-making replacement parts that aren't available anymore to make sure you get back something that works perfectly. You also receive a service book that has pictures of watchmakers working on your exact watch. Rolex's Daytona might be one of the 'hottest' watches on the market today, but this wasn't always the case. The watch started out as the 'Cosmograph', seemingly named to coincide with NASA's efforts to explore the frontiers of space. Unfortunately, Omega's Speedmaster won out and became the Moonwatch, leaving Rolex's new watch lacking a sense of purpose. It wasn't until 1964 when Rolex rebranded the chronograph by associating it with the Daytona International Speedway, making the watch a racecar driver's tool. References from this point until the 1990s share the same DNA, with a 38mm case size, acrylic crystal and a manually wound Valjoux movement. Some references features pump pushers, while others had screw-down pushers. Bezels were either metal or bakelite, and the dials were generally monochromatic except for the red 'Daytona' text. Compared to the more modern Daytona references which first came out in 1988, most vintage Daytonas feel much more like a tool than a luxury object. The cases and bracelets were brushed, and polishing was used in moderation. Instead of the polished white gold hour markers, vintage Daytonas used simpler batons and small round lume plots.
