The watch is in very good condition and is running well, particularly so for a near 70 years old timepiece. The watch can be dated to 1956, established by cross-referencing its serial number (located between the lugs at 6 o’clock) with published date table. The watch is indeed a testimony to the high quality of workmanship and materials employed by Rolex at that time! The watch measures 34 mm in diameter (excluding crown), a lug width of 19mm and exhibits a beautiful golden minimalist dial, gold dauphine hands, a minute hand and a beautiful and elaborate 14K gold bezel. This particular bezel design in Rolex circles is described as being the “Guill Fant”. The watch is powered by the Rolex caliber 1030 movement. The 1030 was a revolutionary movement and if working correctly (as is the case here) is a wonderful machine. Most 1030s usually run flawlessly and unlike modern calibres, these movements don't wear out parts generally, unless you just run them into the ground! The 1030 was first launched in 1950 is of course a self-winding movement with 25 jewels and a beat rate of 18000 v.p.h. The watch comes on a new lizard (grain?) black strap with gilt pin buckle but no papers/history. It comes housed in its traditional red Rolex storage/display box with matching inner cushion. There you have it, a stunning vintage Rolex Zephyr from 1956 -the year Rolex in fact first released this model. To many, in watch parlance the old adage “first is best” is often true!
