Famed as the proverbial kings of the world time complication thanks to their long and storied involvement with the complication, it is no surprise that even neo-vintage examples of Patek Philippe’s World Timers are as sought-after and revered as they are. Launched in 2000 and produced for a relatively short 6 years, the ref. 5110P speaks exactly that fact. Luxuriously constructed using platinum, the 37mm ref. 5110P is a beautiful amalgamation of style and substance. Powered by the immaculately finished cal. 240 HU automatic micro-rotor movement, which is on display behind its exhibition caseback, the ref. 5110P’s ability to display the time in 24 cities across the globe is easily exercised via the pusher at 10 o’clock on its platinum case. Displaying the 24 city names in the silver peripheral section on its dial, the ref. 5110P exhibits Patek’s incredible craftsmanship via its hand-engraved gray-blue center, elegant lugs, and beautifully constructed case design. With an entirely polished surface, the bright platinum shines in the light and provides a wonderful contrast to the tonal hue of its grayish blue and white dial, and the sparkle of the diamond found between its lugs at 6 o’clock, a hallmark of a platinum Patek. The perfect travelling companion for someone with interests in more than one city, the World Time complication aided in the globalisation of the world during the 20th century and reminds us today of just how connected we are as a society - a testament to the power of fine mechanical horology.
THE DIAL Featuring a blueish-grey centre with a hand-engraved grain d’orge pattern and plain silver periphery for its 24 cities, ref. 5110P's dial is a wonderful complement to the warm hue of its bright 950 platinum case.
THE CONSTRUCTION Measuring in at a wonderfully balanced 37mm in diameter, the ref. 5110P is universally wearable across the majority of wrist sizes, with its long lugs designed to drape around the wrist thanks to their sharp downturn.
