Description

Rare and Precious, Hour Glass, Wristwatch in Platinum, With Diamond-Set Dial, Reference 2461

Lot Description Model: Hour Glass Reference: 2461 Case Material: Platinum Bracelet Material: Leather Strap Year: 1950s Movement: Manual Caliber: 9′ 90 Case N°: 696 185 Movement N°: 975 730 Dimensions: 42 × 22 mm Signed: Dial, Movement and Case The example here offered is part of the reference 2461 also called “Hour Glass” or, as Italians call it, “Tegolino” and is one of the best and most precious examples of the many rectangular watches ever produced by Patek. This flared case in platinum has been preserved in crisp original condition and is completed by the iconic sloping glass. The present watch is distinguished not only by the superb condition of its case, but also and most notably for its silvered dial. The preciousness of this timepiece is further enhanced by the baguette and brilliant cut diamonds used for the indexes. This time only watch was manufactured in yellow, pink and white gold, and, rarely, in platinum. Produced between 1950 and 1964, it was an updated version of the reference 425, which measured 35 mm in length, compared to the more substantial reference 2461 measuring 42 mm in length. The case, manufactured by Markowski for Patek Philippe, who is also known for his later work on the Gilbert Albert designed cases, has smooth clean lines, giving the watch a strong architectural feel.
