First released in 1932 and named after the cross that the Calatrava Knights paraded around Spain and Portugal during the 12th and 13th centuries, the Patek Philippe Calatrava was released as a simple timepiece with broad appeal that would help secure Patek Philippe's finances following Jean and Charles Henri Stern's investment in the brand in the same year. Designed with a strict Bauhaus-inspired aesthetic in mind, the Calatrava used, and continues to use, simplicity as its means of establishing intrigue around the craftsmanship required to construct such a stunning timepiece. Without a complicated movement or a busy design, collectors gravitate towards the Calatrava's clean aesthetic and practicality. The ref. 5297G that we have here plays on this elegant design while also featuring a diamond-set bezel and a diamond-set dial that elevate its aesthetic into the realm of exclusive luxury. Consgructed of 18kt white gold and featuring a black dial, the ref. 5297G is monochromatic with its diamonds providing a pop of opulence that sets it as a truly spectacular timepiece. However, while the ref. 5297G is already incredibly exclusive and luxurious, the example we have here was not only retailed by Tiffany & Co., the famed US jewelers, it is also co-signed with their branding at 6 o’clock, a truly elusive detail that very few examples boast. Featuring a beautiful jet black dial that is encircled by a diamond-set bezel with diamond hour markers, this ref. 5297G's true jewel is its rare and elusive Tiffany & Co. stamp. Featuring a 38mm diameter 18kt white gold case, the ref. 5297G is a wonderfully sized timepiece in keeping with contemporary sizing preferences for classical dress watches like the Calatrava.
