Famous and long-running references include the 130 and 1463, but there are plenty of lesser appreciated but nonetheless beautiful and potentially more interesting references to explore. The reference 1579 is one of them, launched seven years after the 130, and featuring a highly architectural case with faceted lugs that collectors have named ‘Spider’ lugs. Several important factors set the present example apart. Firstly and most obvious is the case material: pink gold. Of the estimated 460 made in the reference, only 185 were made in pink, and so far less than 80 of them have surfaced publicly. Beyond that, the present example belongs to the second series with applied gold square hour markers, more distinct and often more coveted than the first series which used baton indexes. Lastly and as all Patek connoisseurs will know, condition is king when collecting 1579, as the sculptured lugs begin to lose their important facets and definition as soon as they are even lightly polished, and the present watch still retains excellent proportion and generous facets to its case and lugs.
