The Oris Aquis Date Caliber 400 represents the culmination of years of work for the independent Swiss watchmaker, who is now able to offer an in-house caliber with a specs list that will compete with any brand.
The Aquis should be a familiar face, with its handsome gradient blue dial and unidirectional bezel, but the movement inside is brand new and represents an exciting development for Oris and watch lovers everywhere. The caliber 400 isn't the first in-house movement released by Oris, but it comes in the most appealing package yet, with twin mainspring barrels that store five days of running autonomy, a brand-new escapement with a silicon lever and escape wheel, a more stable rotor system, and an anti-magnetic construction that's tested to 2,250 gauss. It's all backed by a 10-year warranty with a 10-year recommended service interval.
The quality of the movement inside doesn't come at the expense of the size of the new Aquis either – the watch's 43.5mm diameter and 13mm thickness is identical to many of the models already in the collection. The Aquis Date Caliber 400 not only represents a compelling value proposition for its combination of design, specs, wearability and innovation, but also for the significance it represents for Oris as a watchmaker, establishing a new benchmark for the brand's horological capabilities.
THE BACKSTORY
You might not realize it if you look through Oris' catalog today, but the Swiss brand previously had an extensive history of in-house movement production prior to the Quartz Revolution. The company developed exactly 229 in-house calibers between 1904, the year it was founded, and 1981, when it began outsourcing ébauches from outside suppliers.
As Oris evolved in the 21st century, it gradually returned to the realm of in-house production, releasing the caliber 110 to celebrate the brand's 110th anniversary in 2014. Oris partnered with Switzerland’s L’École Technique Le Locle to develop the movement over a 10-year period, and ever since, the original caliber 110 has been annually iterated on with the addition of various complications or executions.
The self-winding caliber 400 is a departure from that process, featuring an entirely new architecture that was developed by Oris completely on its own, once again emphasizing its expertise in watchmaking and manufacturing.
