Omega Hodinkee 10th Anniversary Speedmaster 311.32.40.30.06.001 Released in 1957 and based on their earlier chronographs from the 1920s and '30s, the Omega Speedmaster is one of the most iconic chronographs ever. Named after the purpose of the tachymeter along its bezel, the Speedmaster was designed for race car drivers and pilots to time events and make rapid calculations. While these adrenaline-fueled activities might not be for the faint-hearted, they weren't what made the Speedmaster so iconic - that was its use in space and on the Moon. Following a gruelling series of tests with several competing brands, the Speedmaster debuted in space as a piece of NASA standard-issue equipment during the Gemini program of 1965. Following on from its use in space, the Speedmaster continued to evolve throughout the 1980s and well into the 1990s with the Speedmaster Day-Date that was launched in 1996. Launched in 2018 in collaboration with Hodinkee to celebrate their 10th anniversary, the 1996 Speedmaster Day-Date served as the foundation upon which Omega and Hodinkee created a 500 piece limited edition series. Boasting Hodinkee’s brand color for its dial, a gorgeous shade of grey-blue, and modifications to the original variant’s complication through the removal of its triple calendar, the ref. 311.32.40.30.06.001 that we have here is a modern take on a vintage classic. With its central yellow-tipped red seconds hand clearly inspired by the original Speedmaster Day-Date, the resulting timepiece is bright, unique and wonderfully unified in its link to what came before it.
THE DIAL Boasting a grey-blue dial akin to Hodinkee's brand color, the ref. 311.32.40.30.06.001's display would otherwise be rather muted if not for its brightly colored hands and half-blue subdial at 9 o'clock.
THE CONSTRUCTION Coming in just under 40mm in diameter, the Hodinkee 10th Anniversary Speedmaster wears slightly different to the regular Speedmaster, a fact built upon by its straight lugs and lack of crown guards.
