This watch has become a symbol of the conquest of the skies. It is one of the most emblematic pilot’s wristwatches in the history of watchmaking, not least because it was chosen as the official watch of the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association). Born in 1952, the “Navitmer” has undergone a number of evolutions. The famous version with a 24-hour dial, called the “Cosmonaute”, appeared in the early 1960s. Ref. 7806 was launched in 1972. It is recognisable by its “Twin Jet” logo and because it is also the first “Navitimer” to feature a date visible through an aperture at 4:30. The watch is equipped with Cal. 11 (on a Valjoux 7740 base from Ebause S.A.) with a Dubois-Dépraz chronograph module. In 1989, a new self-winding “Navitimer” was launched by Ernest Schneider. It was equipped with Cal. 13 (on an ETA 7750 base). Presented under the reference 81610, it was later renamed A13019 when the new model numbering format was established. The slide rule is positioned at an angle in the rotating bezel, with a few red markings. The logo is the “Wings & Anchor”. Since then, many other “Navitimer” models, followed by “Navitimer GMT” and “Navitimer World” models, have been launched, with mechanical or quartz movements. -- What is a chronograph? The chronograph is a horological mechanism that measures intervals of time with precision. Unlike an ordinary watch that simply indicates the time, a chronograph has additional functions that allow a time counter to be started, stopped and reset independently of the time indication. These functions are generally activated by push-pieces on the outside of the watch case. Chronographs are often used in contexts where the precise measurement of time is important, such as sport, aviation, or even simply as a practical extra function in an everyday watch. It is thought that Louis Moinet (1768-1853) produced the first version in 1816, followed by Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec (1781-1866) in 1821, who gave it the name we use today.
