This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 'Jumbo' ref. 5402BC represents an early and rare precious-metal interpretation of the Royal Oak design. Officially introduced in 1977 - following a first example made in 1972 for the Shah of Iran - the 5402BC marked the brand’s deliberate expansion of the Royal Oak concept beyond stainless steel. Crafted in white gold, it retained the defining proportions and integrated bracelet of the original “Jumbo” while offering a more elevated material expression. The dark grey/black dial is fitted with 11 diamond hour markers, mounted on round white-gold bases, and features AP's iconic 'Tapisserie' pattern. When gem-set, this model is distinguished by non-tritium baton hands, setting it apart from other Royal Oak references of the period. Production of the Royal Oak 5402BC was extremely limited: between 1977 and 1991, only 150 examples were sold, numbered from 1 to 151, with 10 of these later converted into reference 4187BC. This low production volume contributes to the reference’s rarity and historical significance.
