Zenith - Birch & Gaydon London - Land and Water - Silver Cased Trench Watch - Zenith Movement - c.1918

A rare c.1918 Zenith - Birch & Gaydon “Land & Water” trench watch with Zenith movement and exceptional dial. Birch & Gaydon of London were respected retailers and jewellers active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, operating during a period when British firms often partnered with Swiss manufacturers. Based in London, they supplied high-quality timepieces under their own name, combining reliable Swiss movements with cases tailored for the UK market. Today, Birch & Gaydon watches are appreciated for their understated craftsmanship and their connection to London’s historic watch and jewellery trade. This 1918 Zenith - Birch & Gaydon London silver-cased trench watch is a superb example of early wristwatch design, dating to the closing stages of WWI. Signed “Land & Water” on the dial, it reflects the period’s focus on versatility and durability, suited to both field and everyday use. The white dial is particularly striking, featuring bold luminous Arabic numerals and the distinctive red 12, a hallmark of many trench watches from the era. The blued hands and subsidiary seconds complete a layout that is both highly legible and full of character. The original lume remains and has aged to a beautiful buttery colour. The silver hallmarked case is in excellent condition for its age, with crisp detailing and a strong overall presence. Paired with a black leather bund strap, it captures the military-inspired aesthetic while remaining comfortable on the wrist - look at that glorious onion crown! Inside, a Zenith movement provides a reassuring level of quality and precision, adding further appeal for collectors. A rare and historically rich piece.
