Arguably one of the most famous chronograph makers in all of horology, Zenith is best-known for their El Primero automatic chronograph movement. From its status as one of the first automatic chronograph movements ever made (depending on who you ask) and the base movement to feature within the second-generation Rolex Daytona, the El Primero is certainly a modern-day icon. Launched in 1969, its incredible hi-beat rate, amazing accuracy and technical prowess ensured that any watch it was inside was one of the best chronographs money could buy. Offered here we have the Zenith Heritage Cronometro Tipo CP-2 ref. 03.2241.4069/27.C803, which was launched in 2017 as a limited edition of just 50 pieces for PuristSPro as a means to celebrate its 15th anniversary as one of the most influential watch collecting forums on the internet. Inspired by the ref. 03.2240.4069/21.C774 that had debuted the year before, the ref. 03.2241.4069/27.C803 is a heritage-inspired take on one of Zenith’s historic military pilot’s watches. Launched in the 1960s for the Italian air force, the original Cronometro Tipo CP 2 is one of Zenith’s most desirable vintage references, with a manually wound Cal. 146 DP movement, a black dial and bezel combination and a strikingly legible display. Boasting a very similar design, but powered by the automatic El Primero cal. 4069, the Cronometro Tipo CP-2 PuristSPro features the same black dial and bezel combination with an Italian inscription at 6 o’clock and different movement markings to the previously released general production variant with ‘Passion, Opinion, Information’ marked on the winding rotor and the caseback individually numbered.
