Established by Edward John Dent (1790-1853) at The Strand and Royal Exchange, London, circa 1840, following various partnerships from circa 1810. In 1845 the firm made the Great Clock for the Royal Exchange, London, on whose completion the Astronomer Royal wrote, “I believe the Clock you have constructed for the Royal Exchange to be the best in the world, as regards accuracy of going and striking.” This undoubtedly led to the commission to build the movement designed by Edmund Denison for the tower at the Houses of Parliament, which began striking its titular bell 'Big Ben' in 1859. In 1846, Edward Dent was granted Letters Patent for the invention of the first watches that could be wound and set at the crown, known as 'The Keyless', as with the present lot. A very similar watch, dating to 1893, was sold in these rooms, 10 September 2025, lot 333.
