Markwick Markham & Borrell A gold and enamel triple cased verge watch made for the Ottoman market 1813-14, no. 24713 • Movement: gilded full plate, verge escapement, plain flat three-arm balance, decoratively pierced and engraved balance cock and foot, silver regulation plate with Turkish numerals, fusee and chain, crested pillars, signed and numbered Markwick, Markham, Borrell, London, no. 24713 • Dial: white enamel, Turkish numerals, outer minute ring, blued steel hands, signed Markwick, Markham, Borrell, London • Cases: plain gold inner case with aperture for winding to back, pendant and bow with opaque white and translucent red enamel, hallmarked London 1813-1814, case maker's mark AN incuse • mid case gold, back centred with polychrome enamel painted riverside scene, a mill in the mid-ground, mountains in the background and sky of graduated pink guilloché enamel, scalloped border of restored translucent red flinqué enamel, restored champlevé enamel bezels with opaque pink and white enamel interspersed by translucent red enamel flower heads and banners, insidenumbered 3 • the enamel bezels of the outer case with some repairs and decorated en suite diameter 44mm Markwick Markham & Borrell, A gold and enamel triple cased verge watch made for the Ottoman market 1813-14, no. 24713, Markwick Markham & Borrell, Movement: running at time of cataloguing but somewhat dirty and tarnished. Dial: hairline crack through the centre, arc-form hairline cracks above 11 o'clock and 4 o'clock, scuffs and abrasions to surface. Cases: inner case with light scuffs and scratches, some small depressions to the band. Mid-case: multiple scratches to the surface of the scene which has lost some of its lustre, scene chipped to lower left hand side, some soft enamel repairs to red enamel scalloped border, some chips and abrasions, bezels also with some chips and soft enamel repairs. Outer case with multiple repairs to the enamel. Lacking glass to outer case back. Catch to outer case not closing securely at present.
