At the helm of the Lacloche family was Hendricks Lacloche, whose six offspring – four sons and two daughters – ventured into the realm of jewellery. In 1892, Jules and Léopold Lacloche relocated to Paris to inaugurate Lacloche Frères, the most illustrious of their enterprises. Meanwhile, in Madrid, their brothers Jacques and Fernand peddled Parisian jewels under the name Lacloche & Cie. Their sister Bertha, having wed Jacob Jacques Walewyk, marketed wedding trousseaus as Walewyk-Lacloche, while another sister, Emilie, married Joseph Cohen (Coven) in 1902, offering jewels branded as Coven-Lacloche. Among the most celebrated creations of Lacloche are the exquisite ‘petit point’ bracelets, crafted from fine platinum grids and adorned with diamonds in intricate, embroidered patterns. They also produced imaginative gold accessories inspired by animals, in collaboration with artisans Julien Duval and Paul Frey. Yet, their most esteemed pieces are undoubtedly the sumptuous Art Deco jewels reflecting Chinoiserie and Egyptian revival styles, intricately set with jadeite, diamonds, and buff-topped calibré-cut coloured stones. A highlight of their illustrious career was a prestigious commission in 1930 from the Duke of Westminster, who requested an extraordinary ‘halo’ tiara for his bride, Loella Ponsonby, embellished with the renowned Arcot diamonds, which were later sold by Sotheby’s in 1959. At the zenith of their success, around the time of this notable commission, Lacloche Frères collaborated with some of the most esteemed Parisian manufacturers of the era, including Lalique, Strauss, Allard & Meyer, Alfred Langlois, Verger Frères, Henri Picq, and Georges L’Enfant. They catered to an elite clientele of socialites, aristocrats, and royals across France, Spain, the United Kingdom, America, and Argentina. Regrettably, despite their prodigious success, the firm grappled with financial difficulties, and in a shocking turn of events in 1931, they announced their bankruptcy, catching the jewellery world off guard. Their jewels and premises were liquidated, marking a swift and disheartening end to the illustrious era of Lacloche Frères. The sole survivor of the family legacy was Jacques Lacloche, son of one of the founding brothers, who continued to design jewellery in the vibrant contemporary styles of the 1930s to the 1950s. Arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 due to his Jewish heritage, he endured the war and subsequently found success on his own terms, counting among his clientele Princess Grace of Monaco. His pursuits expanded into contemporary furniture and decorative arts, which became his primary focus by approximately 1967. His galleries in Paris and Cannes emerged as essential destinations for cutting-edge interior design. Although his business closed in 1984, its lasting influence was honoured with an exhibition at Sotheby’s Paris in 2012, titled ‘Hommage à la galerie Lacloche, de Marc du Plantier à Roger Tallon, design des années 60-70’. The family’s legacy has garnered renewed attention with a recent exhibition at the Ecole Van Cleef & Arpels in Paris, alongside a lavish publication, ‘Lacloche Joailliers’ by Laurence Mouillefarine and Veronique Ristelhueber. The jewels of Lacloche continue to captivate and inspire new generations of collectors. -- Source https://www.lacloche-paris.com/ https://www.langantiques.com/university/lacloche-freres/ Elegance: very fine FF Rarity: very rare RR Case: very good 8 / 10 Dial: very good 8 / 10 Movement: very good 8 / 10 Expert opinion: very good -- Condition report Case: in very good condition.
