The brand had been crafting calendar watches since the late 1920s, but it was until this reference, 4240, that VC started serially produce triple-calendar watches. With a diameter of 35mm, the ref. 4240 was considered relatively large, as most men's dress watches of the time typically measured around 32 to 33mm. The unmistakable "Cornes de Vache" lugs—translated as "cow horn" in English—and the gadroon-like profile around the case are exceptionally striking and elegant. These cases were available in either 18k yellow or rose gold, with a very limited number produced in steel. The dial is in remarkable condition, displaying minor imperfections and a light patina on the date wheel—both expected and charming signs of age. Notably, after consultation with Vacheron Constantin, it was revealed that this particular example features thicker hands than most 4240 models—a customisation intended for a wearer with impaired vision. The calibre 455 movement, both superb and visually pleasing, continues to function well, maintaining a precision of +9 seconds at 285 amps with a minimal beat error of 0.5. We have these leather straps custom-made for the watch - the original 18k yellow gold buckle is still present. The original pig-skin straps are included too. At Fathom, we typically place little emphasis on the inclusion of original boxes and papers, prioritising the excellence of the watch itself. However, when a box exhibits such meticulous craftsmanship, we can't help but be captivated by the accessories. This watch comes with its archive extract, confirming its production year as 1946. Vacheron Constantin was the brand of choice for aristocracy and royalty in the 17th and 18th centuries, and it's fascinating to imagine the type of individual who might have acquired such a watch just after the war, during a time when much of Europe was emerging from hardship. This owner not only had the means to procure such an exquisite timepiece but also clearly cherished it.
