This Compax is a perfect example: effortlessly elegant with its mid-century proportions, rich with character thanks to a beautifully patinated dial, and powered by a robust in-house movement built to last. A golden era chronograph through and through, this example is a piece of mechanical poetry, written in steel and aged to perfection! Please refer to the high-resolution pictures to assess the condition of the watch. MODEL / REFERENCE: Universal Genève Compax Chronograph, reference 5160. The 645’985 serial number dates its production to circa 1937. Inventory Number: GV 07-01. DIAL+HANDS: The dial is a beautiful display of vintage charm, featuring a warm ivory tone with evenly distributed patina that adds unmistakable character. The classic tri-compax layout is cleanly executed, with crisp black printing, and elegant blued steel hands that offer a subtle contrast. A tachymeter scale runs around the outer edge, enhancing both utility and period-correct design. All three sub-dials remain well-defined and legible, with just the right amount of age-related texture to confirm authenticity and originality. CRYSTAL: The Plexiglas crystal displays some scratches throughout that can be polished off. CASE: The three-body stainless steel case has an elegant wrist presence with and a sweet spot diameter of 35mm. It is still in amazing condition considering its age and does not show signs of over-polishing, with strong profiling lines, even downturned lugs and a flat bezel. The surface displays various scratches scattered throughout and commensurate with the age of the watch. CASEBACK: The snap-on case back in stainless steel comes in good aesthetic condition, displaying some scuffs related to age and use. The brushed finish is beautifully preserved. The inner side is clean and decorated with a “perlage” motif. It bears some prominent service marks along with the period correct stamps as well as the case’s serial and reference numbers. CROWN + PUSHERS: The grooved flat crown is unsigned and could be a period-correct replacement. It is in good condition and operates flawlessly, from winding to time setting. The correct square pushers operate as intended. MOVEMENT: The high-quality, manually wound cal. 285 with a column wheel features a two-button, three-register chronograph, with constant running seconds at 9 o’clock, 30 minutes and 12 hour totalizers at 3 and 6 o’clock respectively. It has been checked by our watchmaker for timekeeping performance. It ticks strong, keeps accurate time and the chronograph module works perfectly.
