The Compur line, introduced in 1933, was among the brand’s first two-register chronographs, and by the 1940s and early 1950s, the reference 22409 evolved into a larger, military-inspired waterproof format with oversized proportions. This chronograph has a 38 mm steel case, manufactured by casemaker Spillmann. Known for producing robust, screw-back waterproof cases, Spillmann was a preferred partner for Universal Genève’s tool watches. The case is in a very good condition, showing only minor signs of use. The screw-down caseback bears the correct reference and serial numbers, which dates this chrono to 1943, and the domed plexiglass crystal is free from marks or cracks. The dial has been professionally restored based on the original layout. It is a glossy black gilt dial with mixed print and luminous Arabic numerals, paired with the original alpha hands. The dial is in an excellent condition and shows only a very light and subtle patina. This watch is powered by the Universal Genève Caliber 285 is a manual wound, column-wheel chronograph movement developed by Martel Watch Co., a movement manufacturer closely affiliated with Universal Genève from the 1930s through the 1960s. Introduced in the early 1940s, the Cal. 285 is characterized by its robust construction, lateral clutch mechanism, and precise chronograph operation. The movement is fitted with a Breguet overcoil hairspring, reflecting Universal Genève’s emphasis on precision chronometry. Caliber 285 was used extensively in Compur and Uni-Compax models and contributed significantly to the brand’s reputation for technical excellence, making it a cornerstone in Universal Genève’s mechanical legacy.
