Produced between 1971 and 1977, the Tudor Monte Carlo is an incredibly robust utilitarian tool that was built to last using Rolex parts and manages to forge its own identity in a very bold and colorful way. Not only is it powered by a sophisticated Valjoux 234 calibre, it is also fitted with an exotic looking dial unlike most of its peers from the same era. Add to the mix a bold Oyster case with screw-down pushers, and you will get a great looking package with investment grade potential.
Please read the condition report carefully and refer to the high-resolution pictures to help you assess the overall condition of the watch.
MODEL / REFERENCE: Tudor Monte Carlo Chronograph, reference 7159, Serial Number 826xxxThe watch was sold on Feb. 12, 1975 in Zürich, Switzerland.
DIAL+HANDS: The two subdials with black, white and orange accents are very well preserved, just like the precisely circumscribed minutes track around the edge of the chapter ring.
The date window at 6 o’clock presents a clean disc with crisp imprint.
The printed hour markers are adorned with Tritium stripes. When activated with UV light, both the hands and the lume on the dial glow and then slowly fade off.
The blocky hands feature lume inlays that match the indices’ tone. The orange central seconds hand is original and complements the exotic vibe of the whole ensemble.
CASE: Despite being polished somewhere in the past, the 40mm Oyster manages to maintain strong profiling lines. The brushed finish on top and the polished sides show few signs of wear commensurate with careful wear.
The polished tachymeter bezel is correct and shows light wear marks, mainly between the 75 and 80 markers.
CASEBACK: The Oyster case back is in fair vintage condition overall, retaining a matte finish and intact knurling along with various scratches throughout. The center portion displays a legible engraved text that started to fade away in some places. Please refer to the pictures.
The inner side is clean and bears all the period-correct stamps.
CRYSTAL: The original plexiglass crystal is clean, with very light wear marks. The magnifying Cyclops at 6 o’clock is pellucid and aligns perfectly with the date window.
CROWNS+PUSHERS: Signed Rolex “Triplock” crown that closes securely and operates as intended.
The screw-down pushers are correct and present no issues whatsoever. They can be unscrewed to engage the chronograph module crisply.
MOVEMENT: The column wheel switched Valjoux 234 calibre features a two-button, two-register, chronograph display with a date function.
It is signed and has been checked. The movement keeps good time, and each function works as intended.
BRACELET: The 7838 bracelet is complete with 13 folded links and 20mm, 380 end links. The signed clasp is dated 1983, suggested by the “H” stamp. It is likely a later replacement.
ACCESSORIES: Tudor presentation box and original warranty paper.
