1990 TAG Heuer 1000

A scarce TAG Heuer 1000, this model with the blue dial and bezel was sold in Japan only and in limited numbers. Model reference 980.613B. HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH? From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in the second quarter of 1990. CONDITION TAG Heuer 1000 watches are always popular, and now fetch more than the mid range 2000 and 4000 series. The size, style and robustness of the design has become a classic, and most people who wanted a TAG in the 1980’s would have considered this at the time. We tend to avoid the gold or PVD plated cases unless they are very good, but the stainless steel is always the best option if available. Nine times out of ten this model will come with a black dial, but the full lume dial is next in the list followed by blue and red. We have been lucky enough to have all four dials now at various times. This one is in great condition – the ETA movement is working perfectly, and will be fitted with a new battery before being sent out. The dial is clean and the lume plots not darkened. The minute hand has a little darkening, and the lume plot on the bezel is missing some of the lume. The bracelet is original and a good size – unusual for watches sold in Japan, where wrist sizes are on average smaller – and the bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. Unlike the earlier bracelets on the 1000 series this is solid links, not folded. The signed clasp still has the divers extension too to allow the wearer to slip the watch outside of their wetsuit – this was a proper tool watch in the day. The sixty click unidirectional bezel is very good, with a positive click to it, and the glass has very minor scratches. Other than minor wear and tear marks it is difficult to fault this watch.
