THE WATCH This outstanding vintage 1967 Seiko MACV-SOG reference 6619-8280 Vietnam War era military watch is a rare and historically significant wristwatch. Some of these watches were issued to American Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel during the Vietnam War, making them an important and collectible piece of military kit. SOG was an elite unit conducting classified covert operations in North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. These Seiko watches were either issued directly through Counter Insurgency Support Office “CISO”, run by legendary Director Conrad “Ben” Baker, or purchased by recon personnel on the open market at the instruction of command. Ben Baker was well known for procuring specialized equipment in support of MACV-SOG operations, which carried our unconventional warfare missions through the conflict. The models known to have been worn by SOG forces include the 6119-8280, 6619-8060, 6119-8100, and 7005-8030 automatic divers. This 6619-8280 is widely considered the first of the iconic MACV-SOG watches or the grandfather SOG, appearing around 1967 as a “pre-CISO” procurement before official issuance. With its simple, durable construction and water-resistant design, these watches were favored for rugged field use during classified missions. To learn more about the legendary history of the Seiko MACV-SOG, visit watchesofespionage.com. Because many of these watches saw real service in harsh environments, surviving examples in good condition with original components are extremely difficult to find. This example is in great condition for its age and is truly a rare find. The stainless steel 37mm case shows honest wear and light scuffs consistent with age, while retaining strong original edges and contours and appears to be unpolished. The original charcoal gray sunburst dial and correct Arabic numerals shows honest vintage patina consistent with field use but in great shape for its age. There is light, even discoloration visible on the upper portion of the dial, typical of period humidity exposure seen on authentic MACV-SOG issued Seiko’s. Dial printing remains crisp and fully intact. Original hands present with matching aged lume. The original lume on the numerals and hands have an attractive creamy greenish patina typical for Seikos of this time and it remains stable and does not show heavy degradation under UV inspection. The acrylic crystal is also in excellent condition. The watch features a day/date with quickset function and is powered by the Seiko 6619 automatic movement beating at 18,000 bph. The watch was recently serviced in January 2026. It comes on an aftermarket genuine Seiko stainless steel bracelet tapering from 18mm to 16mm. The watch can be shipped with a Nato strap instead if requested. Finding one of these 6619-8280’s in all original good condition, with honest is exceptionally uncommon. Offered by Morry & Krichy.
