Description

Seiko King 5246-6000 - (Daini) Serviced Jun 2023

Before the quartz crisis changed everything, Daini Seikosha's King Seiko 52 chronometer-specified series were released. This 52 series of movement was the successor to the hand-wound 45 caliber and was pitted against the Seiko Suwa's 56 series of chronometers. These movements appeared in a small number of King Seiko Special Chronometers, the best known of which are the 524X-6000s, featuring a gentle  monocoque case design. These were the first automatic Hi-Beat KS by Daini Seikosha. At a frequency of 28,800 bph, it was less than the 36,000 bph true Hi-Beat, but was regardless, significantly higher than what was the norm of that era. The 52 caliber held its own in terms of accuracy and precision. The models with the ‘Special’ label were said to be at a standard near or even equal to the GS ‘AA’ standard. This is a comparatively minute watch, by the standards of many timepieces of any time. With a 35 mm diameter, it is a full 2 mm smaller than it's Suwa competitor, the King Seiko 562X-7000 series. Furthermore, the movement is marginally slimmer, and more linear in design, and therefore perhaps a bit better suited to smaller wrists. The needle sharp second hands makes its smooth journey across the textured dial, finished , with an easy satin brush. The silverly steel hour markers are clean and distinguished with a clear black lines, matching the tapered and similarly lined sword hands. The dial and hands are largely blemish-free with little patina and marginal corrosion at the edges. Additionally, the movement's instant date changeover works cleanly, with the quick-set functions of the date working in perfect order. The satin and cloth-polished case retains all of its sharp lines. Both case and crystal sports minor, hardly visible abrasions marks. Please refer to photos for details. The engraved KS logo is clearly marked on the caseback, and the original crown still works the second hack, date change, and hand winding functions.  This little gem can be an eye catching conversation starter anywhere. In the eyes of collectors, aficionados and experts, and as far as feats of technology are concerned, the ‘King’ was never inferior to the ‘Grand’. Till today, the KS remains one of Seiko’s biggest stepping stones to creating a truly Hi-Beat timepiece and is now still considered an under-rated peer to the Swiss counterparts of the horological world. Please be mindful that the caliber is fairly old, and required care when winding the spring. Please also note that, as with all vintages, the movement may be damaged if an attempt to change the date between the hours of 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM is made. Please consider to change the date when the time is outside that range first, then reset the time after adjusting the date. Accuracy of the timepiece is dependent on the wound spring. The timepiece will lose some seconds near the end of the wind. Please also note that while the waterproof gasket has been replaced, it is strongly recommended not to use the timepiece under environments with extreme moisture. Selling as it is, please see watch conditions as displayed in photos. Willing to ship all around the world.
