However, the first automatic King Seiko was in fact developed by Suwa Seikosha. The high-beat 56 series caliber, which powered this early automatic King Seiko, was subsequently used to drive a diverse range of King and Grand Seiko models, becoming arguably Seiko’s most successful automatic movement. The King 56KS is the most common King Seiko. Seiko probably sold hundreds of thousands of them from 1968 to 1975. Many cases are “monobloc”, the movement is only accessible from the front, especially in the first years of production. Until 1971, all cases had the famous gold coin on the back, except the Vanac series.
