Rolex Submariner Date Red Tropical MK2 Dial

1969 Rolex “Red” Submariner Ref.1680 There are vintage investment watches, then there are “Red” Submariners. The “Red” Submariner 1680 is one of the most sought-after vintage Rolex references. The example we have for sale has a gorgeous tropical dial with creamy indexes and hands. The dial is a Mark II, as signified by the meters first configuration, the open number six, the elongated “f” in “ft” and the white printed “Submariner” coated in red. This submariner is in fantastic condition with a thick case which only adds to its appeal. The stand-out feature about this watch is the original and gorgeous dial. The dial has taken on a dark chocolate colour. The brown Submariner variant, as rare as it is beautiful, was most likely spawned from a manufacturing flaw. This makes it highly sought after by collectors. Brown Submariner dials are found in Meters First Mark II & Mark III dials and typically in case numbers in the 2.2m or 2.3m ranges. Brown Submariner dials are ultra-rare because it is likely that only a small fraction of the dials turned brown and many if not most of those dials were probably destroyed or replaced during service. The indexes and hand-set have also aged to a gorgeous light yellow colour. The hand-set (minute hand) does have some cracked lume (as a preventative measure clear lacquer was applied to the underside of this minute hand to preserve/prevent any further cracks and loss of lume). The stainless steel case is thick and appears unpolished with minor scratches commensurate with the age of this watch.
