Sapphire crystal and screwed steel caseback. Collector's watch from 1971 with modern Rolex case. Watch guaranteed 2 years. Watch no longer in Rolex catalog replaced by reference 126610LN. In 1969 Rolex launched the 1680, the first submariner with date function, featuring a flat-profile acrylic glass known as "chimney glass" by the fact that it protrudes 3mm from the edge of the bezel. For the first time on a submariner, a cyclops lens is glued to the outside of the glass to facilitate date reading. The bezel is bi-directional and its rotation is not notched. This model also marked the brand's first all-gold version of a sports model. The 1680 was produced until 1979, and during the first years of production, steel 1680s sold mainly on the North American market were marked with the submariner logo painted in red, before being gradually replaced by white models from 1974 onwards. The two models coexisted until 1975, when only the white 1680s were sold. This explains why the 1680 with red writing has no specific serial number, and remains referenced and marked as a normal 1680.
