There are small spots visible across the dial, repair marks on the luminous indices, and cracks in the luminous hands, but it generally retains the typical Submariner atmosphere of this period and is in good condition. The Ref. 168000 is known as one of the minor variations of the Submariner Date. It is speculated that around 1985, an additional zero was added to the original reference number, 16800, and the case began to be stamped with 168000. Collectors have long rumored that this change indicated a change in the stainless steel material, and since Rolex had publicly stated that it had been using 904L stainless steel since 1985, the Ref. 168000 is likely the first model to use 904L stainless steel.
