Few watches have shaped modern sports watch design like the Submariner. Introduced in 1953 as a professional diver’s instrument, it quickly became the benchmark for underwater reliability and legibility. In 1967, Rolex introduced the reference 1680, the first Submariner to incorporate a date function, marking a pivotal evolution in the model’s history. This 1976 example represents the classic era of the 1680. Housed in a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, it is fitted with a period-correct bi-directional bezel and black aluminium insert with silver diving graduations. The matte black dial features tritium luminous hour markers and matching hands, now aged gracefully, preserving the authentic vintage character collectors seek. The date aperture at 3 o’clock is magnified beneath the distinctive acrylic “top-hat” plexi crystal, a hallmark of the era. Powering the watch is the revered Rolex calibre 1570 automatic movement, one of the brand’s most respected vintage calibres, known for its robustness and long-term reliability. The watch is completed with a stainless steel Oyster bracelet featuring a folding clasp.
