The Rolex Submariner stands as one of the most celebrated sports watches ever created. Introduced in 1953 for professional divers, it became the first wristwatch to guarantee water resistance to 300 metres (1000 feet). Over time, its rugged construction, timeless design, and pioneering technical achievements elevated it far beyond its tool-watch origins, securing its place as one of the most recognisable and influential watches in horological history. In 1967, Rolex introduced the reference 1680, the first Submariner to feature a date window, a milestone that reshaped the identity of the model. Early examples with red text are now highly collectible, while later iterations, such as this example, feature white “Submariner” text, earning them the nickname “White Submariner.” These watches remain beloved for their classic proportions, matte dials, and beautifully aged luminous material. This particular 1980 example is fitted with a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, complete with the period-correct bi-directional bezel and a black aluminium insert with silver diving graduations. The watch features a desirable Mark I matte black dial, defined by its tritium luminous hour markers that have developed a warm, even patina, along with a matching aged handset. The acrylic top-hat plexi crystal enhances the vintage character while ensuring excellent readability of the signature date window at 3 o’clock. Powering the watch is the legendary Rolex calibre 1570 automatic movement, renowned for its durability, accuracy, and longevity, one of the most celebrated movements in Rolex’s history. It is paired with a stainless steel Oyster bracelet featuring a folding clasp with dive extension. Originally purchased in October 1980, this Submariner comes supplied with an outstanding vintage set, including its inner and outer Rolex boxes, leather card holder, punched international warranty paper, and Rolex booklet. A superb and highly authentic example of one of Rolex’s most important transitional dive watches. This Submariner is also covered by our 12-month SWC warranty.
