Back in the 1960s, when Rolex was designing a watch to withstand the overpowering pressure and assist divers in deep water operations, Rolex took the module of the reference 5513 and incorporated a Helium Escape Valve and thus it became the original concept of the now iconic reference 1665. The current watch is a variation of the Rolex 1665 nicknamed the Double Red Sea-Dweller “DRSD” for the two eye-catching red lines on the dial. While the DRSD was in production for approximately a decade from 1967 to 1977 it is divided into a generic 4 dial variation. The present watch is fitted with a MK IV dial and with a Rolex Patent case back. As a model of great heritage, the Rolex 1665 is a reference highly respected and beloved by all watch collectors and enthusiasts. This particular example has a meaningful provenance. Indeed, it originally belonged to H. Crushcov who was a saturation and Comex diver who worked for many years in the North Sea, including on the Piper Alpha, and other locations around the globe. The watch is accompanied by the original diving logs of Mr. Chrushcov and provide all the details of his impressive career. The piece also comes with several pictures taken at the time and illustrating the extraordinary provenance and history of this Rolex Sea-Dweller Double Red.
