Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665

Description

Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 Rail Dial From 1974 REF: 1665

The present Rolex Sea-Dweller reference 1665, bearing the serial number 3546XXX and dating to 1974, is a highly attractive and well-preserved example of this iconic professional diver. The stainless-steel case remains excellent and sharp, having been polished in the past and now showing only very light wear consistent with careful use. The serial and reference numbers between the lugs are crisp and well defined, attesting to the strong overall integrity of the case. The caseback is correctly stamped “1665” and “1.72,” with the last three digits of the serial number additionally engraved inside the caseback, as expected for the reference. The watch is fitted with a tritium “rail dial,” a service replacement from the late 1970s. The watch was originally delivered with a Double Red dial, which was changed during its lifetime, a practice not uncommon for professional Rolex models that saw regular use. The present dial is preserved in very attractive condition, with well-balanced tritium luminous material that matches nicely with the hands. The rotating bezel insert was replaced in the 1990s; it is fitted with a tritium luminous pearl. The original silver brushed date disc remains in place, a correct and desirable detail for early Sea-Dweller references. The watch is paired with a very nice Rolex Oyster bracelet reference 93150 with 580 endlinks. The bracelet shows virtually no stretch and is secured by a clasp bearing the code “B,” further reinforcing the overall quality of the ensemble. Mechanically, the watch is in perfect working condition at the time of cataloguing. While the dial has been replaced from its original Double Red configuration, all other elements are correct and well matched for a reference 1665. With its strong case, correct components, attractive tritium service dial, and excellent overall condition, this Sea-Dweller represents a compelling opportunity to acquire an important vintage Rolex professional model with honest history and outstanding presence.
