Description

1960 Two-Tone Rolex Zephyr Ref. 1008

Why This Watch Matters With an Oyster-style bracelet and a two-tone appearance, this Rolex Zephyr offers a great blend of sport and luxury. The Full Story The Rolex Zephyr went into production in the 1950s with ref. 6582. It was soon followed by ref. 1008, which is the example we have here. When ref. 1008 was released, Rolex offered this watch with either a black or silvered dial, this one features the latter. The Zephyr is characterized by the cross-hair dial and faceted bezel. This model has a thinner profile, including a flatter, two-tone riveted Oyster bracelet that was clearly meant to be a more subtle and elegant alternative to other bracelets Rolex was producing at the time. The Zephyr has a look unlike any other Rolex ever produced. The cross-hair dial and dot lume plots give this model a unique appearance. The two-tone motif also dresses up the watch, while the Oyster bracelet keeps it sporty. This example is in great shape, especially for a watch from 1960. The inside of the caseback is stamped with the reference number, "1008," and date code, "II.60," indicating it is from the second quarter of 1960. This corresponds to the 1960 case number and the date code on the bracelet clasp of “4 60.” The Fine Print Maker: Rolex Model: Zephyr Reference: 1008 Year: 1960 Case No: 545589 Material: Stainless steel and gold Dimensions: 35mm diameter; 10.5mm thickness Crystal: Plexiglass Lume: Yes, radium Caliber: Rolex self-winding caliber 1560 Bracelet/Strap: Two-tone rivet Rolex Oyster Bracelet with no. 57 end links.
