Originally developed in collaboration with Pan American World Airways (Pan Am), the GMT-Master was designed to meet the specific needs of international pilots and frequent travelers. Launched in 1954, the GMT-Master quickly became an icon with its distinctive two-tone bezel, allowing wearers to track multiple time zones simultaneously. The inaugural model, reference 6542, set the stage for a series of evolutions, introducing improvements like the iconic Cyclops lens for enhanced date visibility. Over the years, the GMT-Master has evolved into a symbol of both technical prowess and enduring style, capturing the imagination of adventurers, aviation enthusiasts, and watch connoisseurs alike. This iteration of the GMT-Master II, reference 16760 was a very short production run from 1983 until 1988, and has the accolade of being the first iteration of the GMT-Master II. Coming set in a thicker 40mm Oyster case fitted with a bi-directional GMT bezel utilising the new red/black “coke” bezel insert (for the first time in the GMT-Master series). The glossy black is fitted with luminous hour markers and hands, edged in white gold to prevent tarnishing (another first). The second time-zone hand is a contrasting red and the dial is finished off with the classic date feature at 3 o’clock. Fitted with a sapphire crystal glass (for the first time on this model) and powered by the Rolex 3085 automatic movement (first movement with a hacking hour hand) on a matching steel Rolex Oyster link bracelet with a folding safety clasp. Originally sold in August 1988 and in fine condition for its age, supplied with its original inner and outer boxes, translation booklet, calendar card, swing tag, seal, Rolex service card (June 1997), plastic warranty wallet and original perforated international warranty certificate.
