Introduced in 1989 as the successor to the 1016, it modernises the calibre whilst retaining the very essence of what made the Explorer an icon of utilitarian watchmaking. This particular piece has been kept in superb cosmetic condition and comes with its original set. The Rolex Explorer is one of Rolex’s legendary tool watches, launched in 1953 and inspired by mountaineering expeditions such as the one to Everest that same year. The early models established its iconic design: a 36 mm steel case, a black dial and distinctive 3-6-9 hour markers for optimal readability. The reference 1016, produced for many years (approx. 1963–1989), defined the Explorer’s identity, combining durability with improved precision and water resistance. In 1989, the model evolved with the reference 14270, which incorporated a sapphire crystal and more modern finishes whilst retaining its classic look. Despite these updates, the Explorer has remained remarkably consistent in terms of design and purpose. Its simplicity, robustness and timeless style make it one of the most versatile watches ever produced. This particular piece is in excellent condition and features a pristine dial, as well as a case and strap in very good condition. Naturally, some signs of wear are visible, as the watch is nearly 30 years old. However, these are minimal and add to the piece’s vintage character. It comes with its original box and warranty papers.
