1974 Rolex Datejust 1603 Sigma dial

With a blue Sigma dial and an engine turned bezel, this Datejust is just a little different to the average. Model reference 1603 HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH? From the serial number between the bottom lugs on the case we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1974. CONDITION The 1603 is a close cousin of the reference 1601, the main difference being the 1601 had the fluted bezel and the 1603 the engine turned bezel. The other thing to look for, which featured on some but not all models, was a sigma dial. by adding the letter σ (sigma) either side of the SWISS MADE detail at 6 on the dial, Rolex indicated that only the hour markers and hands were made from gold. The Sigma system was designed to show that the top Swiss brands were not cutting corners when it came to quality, and this article explains more. The dial is at first glance very good, but if you look closely you will see the paint is thin around the step in the case. The automatic movement is the Rolex calibre 1570, which doesn’t have quickset date but does have the open 6 and 9 that just look so good. Everything, including the screw down crown, is functioning perfectly. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
