Description

1972 Rolex Datejust 'Wide Boy' Reference 1601

Why This Watch Matters This "Wide Boy" Datejust with wide-set indexes and handset are welcome accents on an otherwise understated classic design. The Full Story The Datejust has remained Rolex’s mainstay model since it was introduced in 1945. The silver sunburst dial has turned to a soft, light champagne color that goes so well with the unusual block-like wide-set indexes and handset, which has earned the moniker “Wide Boy” among collectors. The dial is also indicated with the “Sigma” symbols at the bottom; the “Sigma” dial has become most famous because of its appearance on some Daytona dials, and become a sought-after variation. These little Sigma symbols were most often associated with watches produced in the 1970s, to indicate that the indexes and hands were in gold – in this case, white gold. It was an effort by the Swiss watch industry trade association, l’Association pour la Promotion Industrielle de l'Or (APRIOR), to emphasize the value of watches using any gold material. This Sigma designation can be seen in other timepieces around the same time, such as on the dial of a Patek Philippe Nautilus. The case shows some light wear with signs of light polish in the past. There are some scratches and light indentations visible on the back of the lugs. The ridges on the fluted bezel show some minor roundness which is often seen as part of the aging process. The dial is in clean condition without any noticeable blemishes. The lume plots are full and have gained a beautiful creamy patina except for the ones at three and 11. The handset shows some light aging, and the lume is fairly darker in color compared to the lume plots.3674852622411, 1972 Rolex Datejust 'Wide Boy' Reference 1601, Why This Watch Matters This "Wide Boy" Datejust with wide-set indexes and handset are welcome accents on an otherwise understated classic design.
