Back in the day, the Air-King more closely resembled a classically elegant Rolex dress watch, like the Datejust or Oyster Perpetual. However, that changed in 2016 when Rolex revamped the collection to feature a sportier, more purpose-driven aesthetic via the ref. 116900.  That watch was inspired by the Bloodhound Super Sonic car, featuring a dial that resembled the car's dashboard instruments, which Rolex made.  Like other professional series watches, Mercedes hands swept around the dial. Furthermore, this model was decorated with larger, silvered Arabic numerals and smaller 5-minute hour markers.  Ref. 126900 replaced the original 116900 in 2022, introducing the collection to its very own case with new crown guards.  The silvered Arabic numerals are now fully-lumed on the upgraded model, and the "5" marker has been replaced with "05" for better symmetry.  Lastly, the ref. 126900 carries the next-generation calibre 3230 time-only movement.
