The Datejust Turn-O-Graph ref. 6309 marks an important step in the evolution of mid-century wristwatch design, reflecting the moment when refined dress aesthetics began to merge with practical functionality. Introduced in 1954, it illustrates a forward-looking concept: maintaining the elegance of the Datejust while incorporating a rotating timing bezel intended for real use, placing it among the earliest luxury wristwatches conceived with a utilitarian purpose. The introduction of a graduated rotating bezel, derived from the Turn-O-Graph ref. 6202, was intended to measure short intervals without the complexity of a chronograph. The reference was manufactured in 14 or 18-carat yellow or pink gold, as well as in steel-and-gold combinations. The model gained historical significance as the official watch of the USAF Thunderbirds aerobatic squadron, from which its well-known nickname originates. Produced only until 1956, the ref. 6309 remained in the catalogue for roughly two years, making surviving examples particularly rare and desirable today.
