The legendary collection began in 1963 when Rolex launched the reference 6239 as a replacement for the reference 6238. Bold yet revolutionary, the tachymeter scale was moved to the bezel instead of the dial, a design that remains unchanged to this day. To gauge market reaction, Rolex released several dial configurations at the time. These included standard silver and black dials, as well as rare "exotic" dials. These "exotic" dials are distinguished by their three-dimensional construction, with recessed subdials, known as the "Step dial," and an outer hour ring, the "chapter ring," which, unfortunately, did not generate much interest among collectors at the time. Based on the lukewarm reception, it was estimated that for every 20 Daytonas with a standard dial sold, one Daytona with an "exotic" dial was sold. It was only when the watch was seen on the wrist of the legendary race car driver and actor Paul Newman that the market finally realized how rare and collectable this dial was, triggering a frenzy for one of the most sought-after Rolex watches to date.
