Rolex Daytona 6238

Description

Rolex Chronograph "Pre-Daytona" 6238 Silver Dial

The Rolex reference 6238, produced between 1962 and 1968, is often referred to as the “Pre-Daytona.” This transitional model bridged the gap between Rolex’s earlier chronographs—like references 6034 and 6234—and what would eventually become the iconic Daytona line, which launched with reference 6239 in 1963. Over its six-year production run, it's estimated that only around 2,000 to 2,500 examples were made in both stainless steel and gold, making the 6238 a rare and historically significant piece in Rolex’s chronograph lineage. This particular example features a thick, well-preserved case and a clean, smooth bezel, paired with a Rolex Oyster riveted bracelet (reference 7205), complete with a clasp stamped 2-58 and end links marked 57. Adding a touch of charm and personal history, this watch was originally purchased here in the Netherlands( where we are based our selves !) by its first owner. He had it engraved in Dutch: “Van Opa voor Marc 1985,” which translates to “From Grandpa to Marc.” A heartfelt detail that adds character and story to an already special piece. The silver ton-sur-ton dial is in excellent condition, featuring a Base 1000 outer scale, crisp black printed text, and a warm creamy patina on the lume — just enough contrast to make it visually pop. Powering the watch is the caliber 72B, which has been fully checked and regulated by our watchmaker. The 6238 embodies refined simplicity — timeless, quintessential Rolex — and remains a true grail for collectors with an eye for early chronograph icons.
