Description

Rolex Pre Daytona Reference 6238

The so-called Pre-Daytona is a quintessential sports chronograph from the golden era of sports chronographs. With all of the DNA of this golden era and the Daytona to follow, including the Singer dial, pump pushers, (modified) Valjoux 72 movement, and the Oyster case, the 6238 speaks to the discerning deep cut types. Under the radar but distinct and important, the 6238 is currently in the unique position of providing somewhat of a value-proposition in the Dayton market at large as well. This particular example is very honest and charming throughout, retaining the original case finishing, a clean dial and intact set of hands, charming C&I rivet bracelet and benefiting from a recent service operating at approximately +2.5s/d… what more do you need? Case: The 36 mm stainless steel case has previously been sympathetically polished, retaining the original finishing and defined boundaries between the brushed the polished surfaces. The circa 1965, 1166xxx serial and reference numbers are clearly visible and intact, and the smooth polished bezel is extremely clean and prominent providing a very distinguished and sporty presence. Dial: The soleil or sunburst textured silver dial is very clean throughout, exhibiting a slight warmth of patina to it in certain lighting conditions. The tritium hands are intact and free of cracking and several hour lume plots are missing, as is common for the era. Movement: The modified Valjoux 72 movement that is the Rolex caliber 722 is winding, setting, and running very well at approximately +2.5s/d, with all chronograph functions working properly. Bracelet: The C&I rivet bracelet is stamped “69” and believed to be full with 12 links. The coronet on the claps is large, well defined, and in great condition. Includes: Sold as watch and bracelet only. The 6238 represents a real opportunity for the discerning collector to look beyond the hype of the Daytona, and at a much lower price point too! This very clean and honest example is running exceptionally well and has the vintage charm and character you wish for.
