Awarded to ROLEX Submariner "Comex 744", ref. 5514 Around 1976 Steel diver's wristwatch with helium valve delivered to Comex and subsequently modified Case: round, graduated rotating bezel, screw-down crown and back, helium valve on the middle, apocryphal engraving on the back "744 Rolex Comex" (not original), signed Dial (service): black, luminescent indexes and hands, central second hand, railway minute track, signed "Rolex", apocryphal "Comex" signature Movement: automatic cal. 1520, 26 jewels, signed Bracelet / Buckle: "Oyster" in steel, ref. 93150, endlink 580 / folding clasp ref. 93150, CV, signed Wrist circumference: approx. 190mm Diam. : 40mm Provenance: this watch comes directly from its original owner, a diver at COMEX (COmpagnie Maritime d'EXpertises) Please note that this watch is sold as is for "spare parts" A stainless steel automatic diver's wristwatch with gas escape valve, delivered to Comex, Marseille, Oyster bracelet with deployant clasp signed. Revision of use to be expected Please note that this watch has been transformed, the dial and the caseback having been modified. In the early 1990s, the owner entrusted his watch to Rolex Geneva for a complete overhaul. During this service, Rolex replaced the original dial with a dial corresponding to ref. 1680. The case back was also replaced during service and the watch was returned to its owner with a smooth back. Rolex justified the removal of the Comex logo on the dial and the engraving of the number and signature on the back by a conflict which pitted it against Comex during this period. Rolex has not returned the authentic dial of this watch, nor its case back. In order to restore his watch to its original look, the owner had the Comex logo affixed and the signature of his watch and his serial number reproduced on the back of the watch by an independent watchmaker. The Comex logo, the signature on the back of the case, and the serial number are therefore posterior to the watch.
