Description

Submariner COMEX 5514 c. 1974 Box

7553 Submariner COMEX 5514 c. 1974 Box This is an incredibly rare 5514 "COMEX" Submariner in good condition for its age. The dial and hands are clean and with a warm orange patina, and the case remains relatively sharp.\n\nRolex's Submariner is perhaps the single most recognisable watch today. Amongst hardcore Rolex enthusiasts, however, a handful of rare references form the 'hall of fame'. One of these references is the 'COMEX' Submariner, which was created for the Compagnie maritime d’expertises (COMEX for short). COMEX specialises in deep sea diving and engineering, and as such needed a highly water resistant watch to give to its divers.\n\nThis partnership gave birth to a number of references. The first was a 5513 with a helium escape valve. This was followed by the 5514, created and sold exclusively to COMEX. Made in at least three batches, they have slightly different features depending on their age. This particular watch is one of the earlier variations, and as such does not have the COMEX logo printed on the dial. The caseback would've featured a 'ROLEX COMEX' engraved in a straight line across the caseback, but this has been polished out showing an indentation where it was. Later models featured a 'ROLEX COMEX' engraving around the edges of the caseback. Rolex submariner 5514 Automatic 40 Scratches, marks or small dings which can be felt. Signs of use. Bracelet may have noticeable stretch. Precious metal hallmarks may be lightly worn but should still be visible. Vintage watches may have heavy patina. Stainless Steel 1974 Box Watch comes with box. Caseback Slight indentation where COMEX has been polished out. Hands Hands generally tarnished all over, lume aged to a darker yellow/orange than dial lume. Bezel The replacement bezel insert has some scratches/marks, most notable around 10 marker.
