Rolex Submariner 5513

Description

Rolex Submariner

This Rolex Submariner is offered in the UK by a private seller. A rare vintage example of Rolex's iconic diver with a sought-after 'Meters First' gilt gloss dial and patinated tritium hour markers. The serial number shows this example was produced in 1966. Presented with the original display box, outer box, and warranty certificate. Fitted with the original Oyster bracelet (Ref. 7836 with 380 end links) - also included in the lot is a worn aftermarket leather strap matched with a Rolex pin buckle. The vendor confirms the watch to be in good working order, with very light scratches on the bezel and some wear around the lume pip commensurate with age. The vendor also notes that this example is believed to be one of the last gilt gloss dial 5513s produced, sold on 2nd September 1967 from H. & D. Fine Ltd, 10 Byward Street, Tower Hill, London - a well-known period London jeweller. Manufactured from 1962 to 1989, the 5513 is among the longest continually-produced watch lines in Rolex’s history. Widely praised for its simple aesthetic, the 5513 was the last ‘no-date’ Submariner to be offered with an acrylic crystal and a matte dial. Designed as a more accessible, no-nonsense version of Rolex’s iconic dive watch, the 5513 is powered by the non-chronometer certified calibre 1520, a self-winding movement with a 48-hour power reserve. The absence of the “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” text on the dial contributes to its clean, ‘two-line’ appearance. Throughout its long production period, the 5513 was offered with a variety of dial configurations. Early examples featured a gilt dial, which is sought after by collectors for its distinctive tone and subtle reflective quality. The watch retains its screw-down crown and Oyster case, which provided 200 metres of water resistance when it was produced. Additional details include the rotating bezel with minute markers, the Mercedes-style hour hand, and the tapered Oyster bracelet, all of which reflect the practical design focus of Submariners from this era.
