Presented to a highly decorated Royal Naval Reserve "G.E.F. Thurstan" upon his promotion to Lieutenant on the 16th July 1960, (engraved on the case back, and documented in the London Gazette 1960). The black glossy dial is completely original, with its contrasting gilt and silver text and pre-tritium luminous compound, set against a beautiful finely-mottled black surface. This early 5504 Explorer also features the closed minute chapter ring, and rare exclamation point below '6', marking it out as a transitional model. Automatic calibre 1530, waterproof to 60m. The 281xxx serial number precisely dates it to 1958, matching the II 1958 inscribed inside the case-back. Guaranteed for two years.
