According to the letter reproduced below, the watch in question was ordered by Sir David Brown from the Rolex dealer, S. Smith and Sons Ltd. Such provenance gives this Rolex an exceptional character and incontestably makes it a unique collector's item.
Sir David Brown (1904-1993) was indeed an illustrious British industrialist. After having developed the David Brown Limited group, this automobile enthusiast bought Aston Martin and Lagonda in 1947, two brands in difficulty which he was to relaunch. He gave Aston Martin its own initials "DB" and a legendary track record including first victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The acquisition of this watch by an eminent man from the world of motor racing, Peter Scott Russell, contributed to accentuating the prestige of this watch. Peter Scott Russell, was a racing driver in the 1950s to 1956 and was notably vice-president of the English Racing Drivers Club. B.R.D.C. It is likely that the latter could have acquired this watch from the Aston Martin pilot, Peter Collins, or from an association with Robert Gregory who was a test pilot for Aston Martin.
