1983 Rolex GMT-Master Reference 16758 With ‘Nipple’ Dial

Why This Watch Matters The GMT-Master is one of the most recognized watch designs that still remains modern after over 60 years. With this 18k-yellow-gold version with the coveted “nipple” dial, you can go ahead and fly in full glamorous style. The Full Story The GMT-Master was first introduced in 1954. It has gone through a design evolution over the years, but there is no question that this model became an instantly recognizable design in many people’s minds with its red and blue bezel. While the GMT model was originally produced as a tool watch for pilots, Rolex realized that there was an increased demand in international travel and a viable market for a dressier version. Hence, it upgraded this ultimate tool watch into a luxe version with 18k-gold case and Jubilee bracelet to be a perfect companion for elegant travel. This example has the coveted pointed indexes with yellow-gold surrounds often referred to as a “nipple dial”; this layout was used in the previous reference 1675 before it changed over to the larger luminous indexes with narrower yellow-gold surrounds. Plus, a quick-date function is a welcoming practical feature to have for a busy traveler. Fun fact: The GMT model was spotted on the wrist of Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger . That’s proof that it looks great on both men and women. The case is well preserved, and has most likely remained unpolished over the years, with thick lugs and beveled edges on the lugs still clearly intact. This is very much a coveted attribute, especially for a gold case since a polish on the case will minimize this portion. There is a minor area of oxidation by the crown guard, which is a common occurrence for a gold case that has not been used or polished for a long time. The dial is attractive with appropriate patina, with some areas showing a slightly more speckled effect, but we think this adds character to the overall appearance. The lume on the indexes and hands has a gorgeous creamy color that enhances the vintage feel. The calendar disc also shows some patina and has open sixes and nines, which is a desirable feature for collectors. The full length Jubilee bracelet (with code stamp very close to the production year of the watch) shows some stretch between the links, but is overall in very good condition with crisp hallmarks and light scratches from wear.

Collectible Features |Rolex 16758

Discover all the different variants of this specific reference that can enhance, or limit, this watch's value and collectability.
Tropical Dial
A dial that has aged from black to a brown or caramel color due to prolonged exposure to sunlight and elements. Highly prized for its unique and attractive aging. Greatly increases value due to unique appearance and collector demand.
Rivet Bracelet
A bracelet design with visible rivet heads on the side of the links, characteristic of vintage Rolex models.
Nipple Dial
The "nipple dial" is a term used to describe a specific type of dial found on certain vintage Rolex watches, particularly the Rolex GMT-Master and Submariner models from the 1970s and 1980s. The distinguishing feature of a nipple dial is its hour markers: instead of the usual flat or applied markers, these dials have raised, gold-trimmed markers that resemble small "nipples." These markers are typically made of gold and are filled with luminous material, allowing them to be easily read in low-light conditions. The nipple dial is considered highly desirable among collectors due to its distinctive look and its association with vintage Rolex models.
