This is the fourth-generation Ref. 16700, which debuted in 1988 to replace the previous Ref. 16750. The movement was upgraded to the next-generation Cal. 3175, improving accuracy and stability, while the plastic crystal was replaced with sapphire crystal, increasing water resistance to 100 meters. Production of this Ref. 16700 was discontinued in 2000, after which the GMT-Master line consisted solely of the GMT-Master II, which featured an added independent hour hand adjustment function.
