Rolex Sky-Dweller 16660

Description

Rolex Sea-Dweller

This Rolex Sea-Dweller is offered in the UK by a private seller. Nicknamed the “Triple 6”, this reference marks Rolex’s shift to modern dive watches, pairing vintage roots with a sapphire crystal and doubled depth capability. The serial number suggests this example was produced in 1986. Presented as a watch-only lot - the original display box and warranty papers are not included. The vendor confirms the watch to be in good working order. The Sea-Dweller first appeared in the late 1960s and was created to extend the underwater utility of Rolex’s existing Submariner line. Referred to by collectors as the ‘Triple Six’, this transitional reference was produced between 1978 and 1979 and included some key updates to the Sea-Dweller. Rolex introduced a sapphire crystal, a new movement, a more secure unidirectional bezel, and a doubling of water-resistance. This example is among the later examples produced of this reference and is offered with white gold hour markers on a gloss black dial. This particular example also features a distinct patina on the dial, a specific form of aging found on some 1980s glossy-dial references. Rather than the linear cracking seen on a standard spider dial, the lacquer on this specimen has developed a granular texture across its surface. This characteristic is the result of a natural chemical reaction in the original dial finish over time, creating a unique matte-like effect that differentiates it from factory-standard glossy examples. The markers and handset also developed a characterful even patina where the tritium has faded over time. Housed inside the case is the chronometer-certified calibre 3035; an automatic movement with a 50-hour power reserve.
